Outfits Not Just Clothes

 I've been utilizing Rent the Runway for over a decade to attend various events or celebrate milestones. as seen in this post  from spring last year. Last month I rented a dress for a big work event that I was helping to facilitate. And even though this dress is subtle it definitely stood out.  coat--Nordstrom(similar here ), dress Derek Lam via Rent the Runway , sunnies-Versace(similar here ) , belt- Amazon , pin- Ceremonial , boots--Steve Madden via Nordstrom(similar  here ) This outfit was sourced from all kinds of retailers. From the high end designer, mid-brand department store, designer rentals, fast fashion online shopping, and a local boutique. There area a lot of pieces and while again nothing overwhelms or comes across as loud, the overall look has impact.  The dress was meant to come with a sash belt, but didn't in the size I ended up wearing, so I slapped on this wide bucket and layered with a long-sleeved top against the October chill. 

 I love white denim no matter the season, but there's something about this point in spring (in Pennsylvania) where the palette of nature feels so fragile. This white denim jacket really pops against that fragility what with the contrast in the sky, bare trees, bit of green, and weathered stone. Here I've paired it with trouser shorts, sheer tights, and the star of this outfit the denim jacket. I'm back and forth on sheer tights, they have a lot of 80's connotations for me, but not in a good way. These shots were taken a few weeks ago, so there's definitely more growth on trees and such as of this posting. This OOTD is all about layers?  First a base of a turtleneck and tights, then a mid layer of tweedy shorts and a chambray shirt. Then topping it off with this plaid coat, boots, and necklace. I love necklaces worn over turtlenecks, it's the perfect backdrop to highlight a statement piece, or make a fairly simple chain feel more special. Tweedy blazer, boho scarf, pajama-esque joggers, rugged boots, statement ring... yeah a lot. But, it all works because each piece picks up on a color from the blazer, plus there's a whole laissez faire vibe that is perfect for a weekend winter outfit, especially during a warmish winter weekend when you can leave off the standard overcoat and get a taste of spring.  Full disclosure: this scarf was a last minute add-on because my neck was feeling a bit irritated from the blazer collar, so while it's adds to the eclectic theme of this outfit it also serves a purpose. Don't you just love it when function and fashion come together?!
