Culottes vs Flares

Each season has it's own take on denim, which is such a ubiquitous fabric that it is no longer reserved for casual weekend jeans, but has found its way into a variety of styles and garments. This spring two particular (and one might say contradictory) silhouettes in denim have cropped up.  Culottes or roomier/mom jeans, and 70's inspired, high-waisted flares.

Both trends are in the extreme, either you go baggie and short, or long and lean. Some ladies could pull off both, but I'd caution those of us who aren't models and/or street style stars to thoroughly test run both trends in the dressing room before making a purchase.

The "culotte" or "mom jean" version (which by the way I HATE culottes, but they are popping up so much I can no longer ignore) are best for taller ladies with slimmer hips, while the flares can help elongate the leg (and with the right shoe) give petite gals a few extra inches.  Plus size/curvy girls should be very particular in experimenting with these trends. As with any jean, it's about finding the right "type" within a particular style. For me, I know less exaggerated flares, that are mid-rise, as opposed to high-waisted are most flattering for my body.  As for culottes, I just can't. I'm not against a mom jean, but I'll stick with my boyfriends thank you very much!

Some buying options for you, regardless of which side your denim trend bread is buttered.

Levi's can't go wrong with a class brand in a dark wash!

H&M straight-up labeled as Mom Jeans and not the most becoming of cuts.

Madewell, this cropped looks comfy, but could obscure curves, be cautious.

Madewell, flares from right of the 70's!

So what denim trends are you hoping to add to your wardrobe this spring? Let me know in the comments!

40 Year Old Cottagecore

dress-Anthropologie(more options here ), sunnies- DIFF Eyewear , necklace- Benevolence LA , bag-- Shiraleah , sandals- Born I first became aware of Cottagecore earlier this summer and found it to be an aesthetic I can appreciate and find aspirational , but was not necessarily a style that aligned with my wheelhouse. Well as I've been growing my hair during covid quarantine and having picked up this dress as seen here , I felt that I was ready to tackle #cottagecore here on my 40th birthday!!! Yep, that's right today I turn 40 (but I don't look it). And while it's been a year like no other, I feel excited for my next year, decade, chapter of my life. I think it's fair to say I'm done having babies and ready to move on from the chaos of very little children to the chaos of big kids.  I no longer feel like I have something to proof in my work, writing, sense of self. I'm just going to enjoy and be grateful for the many blessings of family, friends, health, a...

Rent the Runway to the Rescue

So after the semi-disastrous dress vote from last week I took the stiletto by the heel, aka reserved this Slate & Willow dress from Rent the Runway  for the wedding in July.  Slate & Willow I had my eye on this as a possible outfit for the Tilda Swinton event I attended last month (fancy I know!) But, ended up going pretty casual since it was just a film screening. An AMAZING screening, but not a dressy affair nonetheless.  Anyway, this striped sheath has so many good reviews from a variety of fellow renters in all shapes and sizes, I didn't see one unflattering user pic, so I'm fairly confident this frock will serve my needs come July. And here are some pics of former rentals over the last few years: Nanette Lapore Elie Tahari Elie Tahari Robert Rodriguez Halston Heritage Interesting in renting something for yourself here this summer, use this link , to get $20 off your first rental. You're welcome!

Annie Lennox Realness!

Love the tuxedo detail of these cropped pants. coat/pants-Jcrew(similar here and here ), blazer-Zara(similar here ), shirt-Asos(sort of similar here ), shoes-DSW(really cool here ), gloves-Brian Atwood for Neiman Marcus/Target(more gloves here ), sunglasses-Banana Republic(similar here ) I'm feeling very Annie Lennox circa Eurythmics in this outfit, eh? Most times wearing a coat is a necessity, not necessarily an intricate part of the outfit, but here it really makes the look. And even though the blazer is covered up the hints of it, almost like a lining, work break up an all grey/white look.  And now for your viewing pleasure  Sweet Dreams:   Have a great weekend!
