Layering 101

Lucky Magazine's January Issue had a great profile on layering techniques.  I've been a Lucky subscriber for... well since it began! And I love that I can take ready inspiration from its pages in each issue.  Case in point layering in 4 steps:

You may not be able to read the text in the picture of the spread, but step 1 is an over-sized Oxford and printed skinny pants.

From my closet I pulled this striped button-down and ombre cropped trousers.

Step 2: An embellished crewneck and bright pumps.

Red heels, that I've had forever and wear all the time with a recent buy from Jcrew--a sparkle T-shirt. Here's a close up of each:

Step 3:  Shrunken blazer and a neck scarf:

I've gone with a knit blazer from the Gap, the lining of which echos the color of the pants and the neon trim gives the look a bit of pop. Instead of a neck scarf I added a statement necklace, as well as stacked rings and several bracelets.

Step 4:  Classic cape, colorful gloves, and a structured clutch.

For my final layer I just added this structured coat from Zara and called it a day.

Now of course, with Lucky you always get info on where to shop for every item pictured and from that info I've discovered some great retailers.  But, beyond new items I can pick up I look at each issue for ways to wear pieces I already own in new and exciting ways.

40 Year Old Cottagecore

dress-Anthropologie(more options here ), sunnies- DIFF Eyewear , necklace- Benevolence LA , bag-- Shiraleah , sandals- Born I first became aware of Cottagecore earlier this summer and found it to be an aesthetic I can appreciate and find aspirational , but was not necessarily a style that aligned with my wheelhouse. Well as I've been growing my hair during covid quarantine and having picked up this dress as seen here , I felt that I was ready to tackle #cottagecore here on my 40th birthday!!! Yep, that's right today I turn 40 (but I don't look it). And while it's been a year like no other, I feel excited for my next year, decade, chapter of my life. I think it's fair to say I'm done having babies and ready to move on from the chaos of very little children to the chaos of big kids.  I no longer feel like I have something to proof in my work, writing, sense of self. I'm just going to enjoy and be grateful for the many blessings of family, friends, health, a...

Rent the Runway to the Rescue

So after the semi-disastrous dress vote from last week I took the stiletto by the heel, aka reserved this Slate & Willow dress from Rent the Runway  for the wedding in July.  Slate & Willow I had my eye on this as a possible outfit for the Tilda Swinton event I attended last month (fancy I know!) But, ended up going pretty casual since it was just a film screening. An AMAZING screening, but not a dressy affair nonetheless.  Anyway, this striped sheath has so many good reviews from a variety of fellow renters in all shapes and sizes, I didn't see one unflattering user pic, so I'm fairly confident this frock will serve my needs come July. And here are some pics of former rentals over the last few years: Nanette Lapore Elie Tahari Elie Tahari Robert Rodriguez Halston Heritage Interesting in renting something for yourself here this summer, use this link , to get $20 off your first rental. You're welcome!

Annie Lennox Realness!

Love the tuxedo detail of these cropped pants. coat/pants-Jcrew(similar here and here ), blazer-Zara(similar here ), shirt-Asos(sort of similar here ), shoes-DSW(really cool here ), gloves-Brian Atwood for Neiman Marcus/Target(more gloves here ), sunglasses-Banana Republic(similar here ) I'm feeling very Annie Lennox circa Eurythmics in this outfit, eh? Most times wearing a coat is a necessity, not necessarily an intricate part of the outfit, but here it really makes the look. And even though the blazer is covered up the hints of it, almost like a lining, work break up an all grey/white look.  And now for your viewing pleasure  Sweet Dreams:   Have a great weekend!
