Last of the Summer Dresses

jacket-Gap, dress-eShakti (sort of similar here), flats-Gap(similar here), ring-Jewel Mint(available via Poshmark here), necklace-Gifted(similar pieces here)

Summer is winding down and the bells are tolling for flowy summer dresses, oh the poetry of it all! Of course, you can transition a sundress into fall, and September is the best month for that transition since the days can still be hot and humid. I paired this boho midi with a fitted denim jacket to balance the volume of the skirt, and pop-of-color flats.

There are a two tricks in capturing the essence of the September sundress. First, have a jacket/coverup for the cool mornings that can be easily removed during hot afternoons. Think of pieces like a bomber jacket or a knitwear blazer. And, of course you can't go wrong with a lightweight sweater. Keep the more rigidly tailored pieces like a tweed blazer and chunky pullovers for later in the fall.

Second, be mindful of your footwear. Start phasing out strappy sandals in favor of peep-toes and closed toed shoes. For shorter dresses, consider leg warmers for your morning commute. They are way easier than tights to peel off when it gets warmer around midday.  It's a fine line to walk, but when you hit the mark you get more wear out of summer dresses while still speaking to the season.

40 Year Old Cottagecore

dress-Anthropologie(more options here ), sunnies- DIFF Eyewear , necklace- Benevolence LA , bag-- Shiraleah , sandals- Born I first became aware of Cottagecore earlier this summer and found it to be an aesthetic I can appreciate and find aspirational , but was not necessarily a style that aligned with my wheelhouse. Well as I've been growing my hair during covid quarantine and having picked up this dress as seen here , I felt that I was ready to tackle #cottagecore here on my 40th birthday!!! Yep, that's right today I turn 40 (but I don't look it). And while it's been a year like no other, I feel excited for my next year, decade, chapter of my life. I think it's fair to say I'm done having babies and ready to move on from the chaos of very little children to the chaos of big kids.  I no longer feel like I have something to proof in my work, writing, sense of self. I'm just going to enjoy and be grateful for the many blessings of family, friends, health, a...

Two Things

First: Isabel Marant's collocation for H&M debuts today in select stores AND online at noon, so you may want to get up on that.  Here are a few looks I'm lusting after. Hello mixed patterns!   Love the oversized coat and the detail on these jeans.   Patterned blazer, cropped colorful trousers, yes please!   Of course, I cannot partake in this collection with my Year Of No Shopping, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't. So get ready to go by noon because I'm sure this noise will sell out fast.   Number Two: I'm thinking about a new haircut.  Something along the lines of Tilda Swinton .     What do we think? I'm not going to go blond, but I like the shorter/buzzed sides and back with length on the top. Mr. Keller is hesitant, he thinks it's too masculine, but I'm kind of in the mood to go a bit edgy and I've had the same cut now for two-ish years...  FYI: Tilda Swinton is my spirit animal!   ...

Gift Guide Part 3--Literature

So far I've covered beauty products and socks in this year's round of gift guides, which are prefect gift categories for the coming winter. To add to that list--reading! Here are a few books from my Books Worth Reading Pinterest board, first up--poetry! James Allen Hall's "I Liked You Better Before I Knew You So Well" from the CSU Poetry Center I LOVED Hall's 1st book   Now You're the Enemy , which won awards from the Texas Institute of Letters, the Lambda Literary Foundation, and the Fellowship of Southern Writers. So this is on my personal wish list to read here during the snowy days to come.  Anthology from Mason Jar Press "The Black Ladies Brunch Collective’s Poetry Anthology,  Not Without Our Laughter ,  is a collection of humorous and joyful poems, riffing on Langston Hughes’s novel  Not Without Laughter . It explores topics of family, work, love and sexuality. The women of BLBC believe, like Hughes, that even in these ...
